Communicating achievements and strategic direction
The Portal Trust is a charity focused on funding educational projects in inner London. Its mission is to support organisations that contribute to the success of young people by providing the financial backing they needed to fulfil their potential.
Over a ten-year period, the charity had awarded more than £50 million in indirect and in-kind grants to a wide range of charities aligned with this goal.
To communicate its achievements and strategic direction, the charity commissioned Red Stone to produce a comprehensive and engaging impact report. The report was intended to showcase headline spending figures from the past decade alongside in-depth case studies of successful projects, while reflecting the organisation’s values and brand identity.

Reporting to diverse audiences
The primary challenge was to create a report that appealed to diverse audiences with differing expectations. External stakeholders, including charitable organisations and fundraisers, required a clear and concise explanation of the charity’s priorities and the types of projects it funded.
Internal stakeholders – such as the Trust’s team, governors and partners – needed a platform that celebrated their contributions and strengthened organisational identity. Additionally, other foundations represented potential collaborators and required insight into the charity’s strategic agenda.
Balancing these needs proved complex. Some readers were likely to skim the report and required strong visuals and accessible summaries. Others sought detailed financial information and deeper insight into funded initiatives. At the same time, the charity aimed to emphasise social value and life-changing outcomes rather than focusing solely on financial inputs.
Highlighting lived experiences
We developed a visually compelling and structured impact report that combined concise financial overviews with powerful storytelling. Headline spending figures were presented clearly, while selected case studies illustrated how grants had positively impacted young people in London, particularly those facing challenging circumstances.
Stories from funded organisations and members of the Portal Trust team were incorporated to humanise the report and highlight lived experiences. The content prioritised social impact, demonstrating how financial investment translated into meaningful change.
Balancing clarity with depth
The final report successfully communicated the charity’s mission, priorities and achievements. It raised the organisation’s profile, promoting the work of grantee organisations, and reinforcing its commitment to supporting marginalised groups.
By balancing clarity with depth and combining data with storytelling, the report engaged multiple audiences and strengthened stakeholder understanding and potential collaboration.
